  • 1 December 1960, 16 Army Light Aircraft Squadron was formed at RAAF Amberley.
  • 26 April 1966, the Squadron became 1 Aviation Regiment.
  • 1 July 1968, the Australian Army Aviation Corps was formed.
  • 1 July 1969, the Army formally took over Oakey aerodrome from the Department of Civil Aviation. 16 Aviation Squadron (Reconnaissance) moved from RAAF Amberley.
  • May 1970. Construction of the base began. By 1 August, 1972, the remainder of 1 Aviation Regiment plus new units were moved there, including the Headquarters Army Aviation Centre and the Army Aviation Centre Base Squadron.
  • November 1973. The School of Army Aviation and 5 Base Workshop moved to Oakey. 173 General Support Squadron and 171 Command and Liaison Squadron were formed at Oakey. 171 Air Cavalry Flight at Holsworthy became 161 Reconnaissance Squadron.
  • Australian Army Aviation has continued to grow and now comprises three major elements.
